ROLE: PHP & JavaScript developer for English language learning web app

COMPANY: English as an Additional Language (EAL) EdTech company - Across Cultures

REPORTS TO: Lead Programmer and Director

Hours: 20 hours a week

Work type: Contractor (long term projects)

Pay: £30 per hour

Across Cultures is a small, multi-award winning organisation. It provides training and blended learning resources to schools supporting children and families who are new-to-English in the school context (both in the UK and internationally).

Across Cultures runs an English as an Additional Language (EAL) blended learning platform, which includes training for schools on how to support learners in this area. Across Cultures also provides courses and consultancy. The company is growing rapidly, largely due to the success of its edtech blended learning platform, the Learning Village (www.learningvillage.net).

The Director of the company is an author in the field of language learning across the curriculum and the company?s education resources are built on good practice in schools and embedded in research. Responsibilities:

  • You will be working with the existing developer who is based in Bangkok - hours of work can be flexible but there will need to be some overlap so that you can liaise, especially during the initial period.
  • You will be working on a web app to help students learn the English language and for their teachers to enrol them and check their results.
  • Development is PHP/MySQL backend (teacher administration, results tracking etc) and JavaScript frontend (student area where they play games to learn English). We use Drupal 7 as the CMS.
  • The web app is already mature with 100k+ lines of code - you will be assisting the existing developer on well-defined projects, daily tasks and other areas that can be compartmentalised so that you can get on with the work by yourself. There will be some time to get to grips with the codebase - liaising with the existing developer will greatly speed up this process.
  • Examples of projects include programming games and enhancing the user experience for learners, developing a ?basic view? for teachers, integrating AI further into the platform and general bug fixing.

Experience required:

  • PHP and JavaScript are a must. SQL is an advantage, as is Drupal
  • Portfolio of work required

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certifications in PHP, JavaScript, or Drupal development are an advantage.
