Job Title: VP of Technology (Player/Coach - 60/40)
Job Description:
We are seeking a Director of Technology who will serve as both a technical leader and hands-on contributor in a 60/40 player/coach capacity. This role requires an experienced, strategic, and execution-focused technology leader who can drive development efforts, mentor a remote team of up to 10 engineers, and manage third-party vendors.
The ideal candidate will have a deep technical background in PHP, JavaScript, WordPress, DevOps, AWS, and eCommerce platforms, along with experience in high-scale transactional environments, preferably within auction houses or similar industries.
This is a fully remote role, but candidates must be able to work in the EST time zone.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Execution (60%)
- Full-Stack Development: Architect, develop, and maintain high-performance web applications using PHP, JavaScript, and modern frameworks.
- eCommerce & WordPress Development: Customize and optimize WordPress themes and plugins, with a focus on WooCommerce and scalability.
- DevOps & AWS Management: Design and oversee CI/CD pipelines, cloud deployments, and security best practices in an AWS environment.
- Performance & Scalability: Ensure systems are optimized for speed, reliability, and security, capable of handling high-traffic, real-time transactions.
- Problem-Solving: Act as the go-to problem solver for high-priority technical challenges.
Leadership & Strategy (40%)
- Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a remote development team of up to 10 engineers, fostering a high-performance culture.
- Vendor & Partner Management: Oversee third-party vendors and technology partners, ensuring alignment with business goals.
- Technology Roadmap: Define and execute the company?s technology vision, strategy, and architecture.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, operations, and executive leadership to align tech initiatives with business objectives.
- Process Optimization: Implement best practices for Agile development, quality assurance, and security compliance.
Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in full-stack web development with PHP, JavaScript, and modern frameworks (React, Angular, Vue.js).
- Extensive experience with WordPress, WooCommerce, and high-traffic eCommerce platforms.
- Strong understanding of DevOps principles, CI/CD, and cloud technologies (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, etc.).
- Expertise in database architecture (MySQL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL solutions).
- Knowledge of security best practices in web development and cloud infrastructure.
Leadership & Business Acumen:
- 3+ years of leadership experience in a player/coach capacity, managing remote engineering teams.
- Proven ability to hire, mentor, and scale high-performing technical teams.
- Experience in vendor management, contract negotiations, and technology procurement.
- Background in auction house technology, online bidding systems, or high-volume transactional platforms is a strong plus.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Familiarity with additional AWS services (CloudFront, CloudFormation, DynamoDB, etc.).
- Experience in machine learning, AI-driven personalization, or blockchain technologies for auctions/eCommerce.
