UW-Madison's College of Engineering, Interdisciplinary Professional Programs Office is looking for a short-term contractor, 6-12 months, for development upgrades to our WordPress multi-site, plugins, external API integrations, etc. and other customized projects. Our systems connect with on-campus software, an Oracle-based course management system, and serve thousands of professionals from registration on our website to receiving a final customized certificate. This includes helping internal teams and campus partners with WordPress, Google Analytics (Universal and/or G4), and proficiency with LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) platforms and web hosting management tools and protocols (Plesk, GIT, SFTP, etc.).
Job Summary Designs, develops, tests, debugs, and troubleshoots software and applications. Conducts system analysis and design, and provides technical leadership, training, and guidance to lower-level staff to support information technology business operations.
Job Responsibilities - Reviews application design specifications, codes new applications, and makes enhancements to existing applications.
- Designs and implements test plans, and prepares systems test data.
- Develops, prepares, or modifies technical specifications for complex projects, system integrations, and upgrades.
- Conducts systems analysis, reviews, and interprets system requirements, and develops detailed system design specifications for system integrations and upgrades.
- Reviews application modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards
- Conducts analysis for the evaluation and selection of vendor software solutions and packages.
- Contributes to the development of data structure and systems performance strategies.
- Develop documentation for sustainability of the code base.
Unique Responsibilities - Manage WordPress sites for both internal and external teams including regular maintenance, upgrades, and feature enhancements.
- Engage with campus Web Hosting team as it pertains to WordPress website development and hosting.
Top Required Skills and 3+ Years of Experience: - In-depth knowledge and experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP
- WordPress and the technologies and platforms that support it (e.g. themes, plugins, Gutenberg editor, APIs, MySQL, LAMP, etc.)
- Experience working with Web Hosting Control Panels (Plesk/cPanel), GIT (version control systems), Secure FTP, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Nice To Have Skills - Experience administering and troubleshooting WordPress sites and/or Multisite installations.
- Experience with React JavaScript framework (or similar framework/library)
- Knowledge of best practices and use of vendor plugins for WordPress
- Understanding or knowledge of AWS
- Knowledge of Foundation or other similar front-end development frameworks (Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS, Semantic UI, etc.).
- Ability to manage projects from start to finish, including scoping, planning, and execution.
- Experience with AWS cloud tools such as Route53 and CloudWatch
- Basic understanding digital marketing tools and concepts such as SEO, web analytics, and how they apply to websites.
