Position Summary

We are rebuilding the engineering team which is central to our mission goals. We are seeking an experienced, creative and disciplined Senior Software Engineer to join us on our journey.

You will collaborate with and report to the VP Engineering & Product, who oversees both development operations (DevOps) and product management. This flat org structure allows you as an individual contributor to collaborate and influence product offerings and customer experiences.

You will have a strong software engineering background but also be proficient in full stack development (from design to database and backend APIs to frontend user experience). You will have previous experience modernizing legacy code bases and creating new foundational code that is maintainable, well documented and follows modern design principles. You create code in a mindful way knowing your fellow engineers and future engineers will need to maintain and enhance it for years to come.

Projects we anticipate you working on

• Rewriting legacy CakePHP to PHP Laravel framework and Laravel Nova
• Refactoring and upgrading a modified Drupal to the latest version
• Creating embedded video conferencing and tracking for our script services products
• Assist in migrating and consolidating various 3rd party services to simplify the tech stack
• Streamline marketing operations by integrating various tools via APIs
• Creating new subscription products
• Tuning Shopify headless search
• Assisting with in the establishment of CI/CD processes
• And a plethora of product features

Position Responsibilities

• Refactor and modernize legacy code using modern design principles to create scalable, maintainable and well documented code.
• Maintain existing code as needed through defect correction and refactoring.
• Design and develop new software features and related database functionality.
• Interpret requirements, create technical documents and provide engineer level scope of work for completing objectives.
• Participate in technical design; including data modeling, functional design, test criteria, UX design.
• Maintain coding standards and security best practices.
• Mentor and train other developers; conduct code reviews.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Minimum of 8 years experience in software engineering
• Minimum of 8 years experience building and maintaining relational databases
• Advanced technical problem-solving skills, coupled with a creative mindset.
• Advanced skill in PHP using the Laravel framework
• Fluent in various programming design patterns such as MVC, repository pattern (Eloquent or similar ORM), DI, factory pattern, builder pattern etc.
• Advanced skill in functional testing including unit testing, integration and system testing
• Fluent in software architecture, software development processes, AGILE methodology and CI/CD processes.
• Advanced skill in SQL or similar database query language
• Advanced skill in OLTP database design including normalization, data modeling, and performance tuning (indexing)
• Moderate experience using Next.js
• Moderate experience building and maintaining REST APIs in PHP
• Some experience with cloud environments (preferably AWS but Azure and GCP acceptable)
• Some experience utilizing Redis
• Familiarity with CMS such as Drupal, WordPress etc.
• Fluent using Git and Github for source control
• Disciplined in regularly updating skills thru reading, online learning etc.

BONUS Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (this will set you apart)

• eLearning or LMS product experience
• Using other Laravel ecosystem tools such as Forge for server management and Envoyer for release management
• Shopify either as a user or working with Shopify APIs
• CakePHP framework
• React Native for mobile development
• GitLab or similar DevOps all in one platforms
• Terraform or similar infrastructure as code (IaC) technology
• Python or Scala for data processing with Apache Spark
• Knowledge of event driven architectures or FaaS
• Data warehousing concepts, tools and processes such as ETL/ELT, columnar database storage, data lakes, Kimball fact and dimension modeling etc.
